Good morning,

Today you will need to carry out some research into legal and illegal drugs, and their impact on health. You will work in a pair and then 5 pairs will be selected from the group to present to the class next week.

You will need to divide up the topics below, produce powerpoint slides (no more than 10) on the content and practice what you are going to say. You have today's lesson and Friday's.

Your presentation must cover:

  • What is a drug? Definition and examples
  • Examples of illegal and legal drugs. Give examples of both including both prescription and non-prescription drugs for the legal section.
  • What is addiction?
  • Problems with drug abuse and addiction - both health and social impacts
  • Why people use drugs

Both legal drugs and illegal drugs can lead to addiction and abuse, so you should make sure your presentation gives a balanced view i.e. alcohol abuse is a much more serious problem than illegal drug use - 9000 people a year die of alcohol related problems and 110,000 people die from smoking whereas only 3000 die of drug related illnesses. [all numbers are approximate].

Your presentation will be judged by your peers and me.

Enjoy!

Cover work 09/01/2014

Good morning,

For today's lesson you need to carry out some research in heart disease and it's treatment. In our next lesson I will try to order equipment for us to do heart dissections, so you can see what you've been learning about.

  1. Read about how the heart works and play the game associated http://www.bhf.org.uk/heart-health/how-your-heart-works.aspx  and http://www.bhf.org.uk/heart-health/how-your-heart-works/know-your-heart.aspx
  2. The output from this lesson needs to be a powerpoint or information file about heart disease and high cholesterol. Use the links below to find out information and make sure your presentation/info file contains information on all of the points below:
Print out your work and bring it to the next lesson to hand in. If you have made a powerpoint, print it with multiple slides on one page.
